What To Do If a Pupil Vomits in Class: Step-by-Step Guide
It’s one of the least glamorous parts of running a school, but also one of the most important. Vomiting incidents in classrooms or corridors can spread illness quickly if they’re not managed correctly.
For school leaders and site teams, having a clear plan makes the difference between a calm, safe response and chaos. Here’s a step-by-step guide you can rely on the next time it happens.
Step 1: Clear the Area Immediately
Move pupils and staff away from the incident. The less exposure, the lower the risk of illness spreading.
Step 2: Call Your Site or Cleaning Team
Make sure your team is trained to respond to biohazard incidents. If your cleaning is outsourced, alert your provider straight away.
Step 3: Ventilate the Space
Open windows and doors where it’s safe to do so. Good ventilation reduces airborne risk and makes clean-up safer.
Step 4: Wait for Trained Staff in PPE
Nobody should attempt cleaning unless they’re trained and wearing disposable gloves, an apron, and face protection. Using the wrong products or methods can spread contamination further.
Step 5: Professional Clean-Up Protocol
Trained staff should:
- Apply absorbent granules or powder to contain the spill.
- Remove solids with disposable towels, working from the outside in.
- Clean with detergent, then disinfect with a chlorine-based solution (at least 1,000ppm).
- Bag and dispose of all contaminated materials via clinical waste.
- Safely remove PPE and wash hands thoroughly.
Step 6: Keep the Area Closed
The cleaned area should remain closed for at least 30 minutes, longer if carpeted or poorly ventilated. It should reopen only once the cleaning supervisor or site lead signs it off.
Why This Matters
If not handled properly, even a single vomiting incident can trigger wider outbreaks like norovirus. A structured response protects pupils, reassures parents, and keeps your school compliant.
