Emergency school cleaning protocols for common scenarios

School vomiting clean up in classrooms and corridors

Respond within five minutes. Use PPE, absorbent granules and paper towels. Clean with detergent, then disinfect to the specified contact time. Keep the area closed for at least 30 minutes. Longer if carpeted or poorly ventilated. Reopen only after supervisor sign-off and logging.

Norovirus cleaning in schools

Trigger: two or more linked cases in 48 hours. Increase disinfection frequency in shared spaces to hourly. Switch to chlorine-based disinfection at 1,000 ppm or higher. Deep clean toilets up to six times daily. Avoid dry sweeping or vacuuming. Limit mixing between groups and add hand hygiene points. Keep detailed logs and escalate to the Health Protection Team if spread crosses year groups. Reopen zones after at least one hour and full drying where required.

Flu and respiratory outbreaks in schools

Identify affected zones and increase ventilation. Step up high-touch cleaning of doors, desks, handrails, shared resources, phones, keyboards and taps to two or three times daily in those areas. Clean or steam soft furnishings where possible. Areas usually do not need to close unless heavily contaminated. Allow one to two hours after fogging or deep cleaning before reuse
