Introduction

With a legacy spanning 250 years, Bedford Modern School combines tradition with a contemporary ethos. Home to a progressive, unpretentious, and tolerant community, Bedford Modern prides itself on a culture that nurtures every student’s individual growth. Comprising a 1200-strong student body, ranging in age from 7-18, the school had complex and multifaceted cleaning needs that were, prior to working with Ever Brite, not being met to the standards expected of an institution of its standing.  

Before approaching Ever Brite, Bedford Modern faced significant difficulties with their in-house cleaning team providing a substandard level of cleaning across the board. To align its facilities with its reputation, the school enlisted Ever Brite to overhaul their cleaning practices and improve the standard of its premises. 

Challenges

Ever Brite inherited a situation where the in-house cleaning regime at Bedford Modern was falling drastically short. Along with the practical and logistical challenges that come with providing cleaning to educational establishments, Ever Brite noted a variety of other issues present within the current state of play. Inadequate area management, unmet cleaning standards, insufficient supervision and a dire lack of staff training which all threatened the school's operational success and its commitment to providing an environment conducive to educational excellence. 

School Cleaning Solution

Ever Brite embarked on a comprehensive cleaning strategy to rectify the challenges faced by the school. A seamless transition ensued whereby the management of the school’s in-house cleaning team was taken over by Ever Brite. An Ever Brite Area Manager, Site Supervisor and 19 cleaners were deployed to the site and a robust HR reporting structure for the cleaning team was established.  

Ever Brite’s bespoke cleaning plan involved: 

• Robust Area Management: Direct support and regular involvement from an Area Manager, alongside the Contract Manager and Operations Director, ensure the cleaning team feel valued and part of a cohesive unit. The onsite cleaning support includes methods in cleaning practice, addressing any site concerns and issues quickly and efficiently, involving the cleaning team in regular meetings, and issuing all onsite cleaners with the relevant PPE equipment. 

• Transforming Staff Training: Training was a big priority for the client, where previous cleaning staff had none. Ever Brite overhauled the training procedure, ensuring that every cleaner was fully equipped with the skills necessary for excellence, compliance, and operational readiness. This included the right to work and ensuring that all cleaners held a current DBS check. Training needs were identified by the management team through observation at regular site visits. The transformative training policy covered everything from induction and company policies, health and safety regulations, environmental awareness, quality assurance to practical skills for modern cleaning challenges. 

• Strengthening Supervision: Working alongside the Area Manager, a newly appointed site supervisor now provides daily oversight, adeptly addressing staff concerns and maintaining cleaning continuity during staff absences. 

• Elevating Cleaning Standards: Time investment on-site by management not only helped with retraining staff to ensure the school meets all required standards, but also assures the timely delivery of supplies and the correct levels of stock are utilised across the site.
