Your employees’ happiness is crucial to your business; when it comes to providing a clean work environment, are you doing enough? Implement some of our suggestions yourself and measure the difference in happiness – you might be surprised at how it transforms your team, and the effect it has on your business’ output.

But when it comes to ensuring that employees are happy and their minds are healthy, there’s actually a much more obvious, more cost effective aspect of working life that needs to be addressed: the office.

Before you rush out to purchase a hip new HQ, complete with slide, ball pit and fully-stocked kitchen, understand that it’s the cleanliness of an office that is at the heart of the issue. After all, employees are expected to spend 40+ hours a week – a healthy chunk of their lives – in the same working environment; it’s no surprise, then, that the office can hold a lot of sway over mental health.

As you’ll read further down in this month’s newsletter, the office has become a deal-breaker for potential new recruits, with dishevelled workplaces turning candidates off before they’ve even answered their first interview question.

With the happiness of the future workforce and present employees at risk, business owners are starting to ask what they can do to appease everybody – and there are a number of options:

Introduce Rules

If you’re going to transform the working environment into a bastion of cleanliness and productivity, the simplest starting point is to introduce rules so that everybody can work to keep their environment clean together. For example, are employees washing their own cups up at the end of the day? Is there a rota for emptying the bin?

Being involved in the endeavour together not only promotes a cleaner workplace, but also encourages teamwork, raises morale, and a creates a sense of ‘togetherness’.

Promote Hygiene

Did you know that an unwell employee can infect 50% of the office in just 4 hours? Nobody enjoys being ill, so it also pays to promote more hygienic habits when it comes to illness.

If staff know to wash their hands, dispose of used tissues properly and do what they can to minimise infection, it can have a profound effect on the happiness of the rest of the team.

Share with the Team

The most successful plans require teamwork, so it’s important to raise the issue with your team and receive their feedback. How much is their environment affecting their happiness? Is there anything else that can be done, besides from keeping a clean and tidy workspace? And are they all on the same page when it comes to promoting cleanliness?

Hire a Contract Cleaner

Finally – and perhaps the most effective option – you can hire a professional contract cleaner to ensure the office is cleaned to high standards on a regular basis. This option puts lets pressure on your team, negating any extra stress experienced by adding cleaning to their workload.
